Reflex joins the Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP) for 2017

Edmonton, AB, June 7, 2017 – Local software development company Reflex Enterprise Solutions Group is making efforts to support the employment of post-secondary Alberta students by joining the Government of Alberta’s Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP). Reflex has recently brought on three student employees to assist with the company’s software development and marketing efforts.

The STEP initiative, which was established in 1972, was cancelled in 2013 and revived in 2016 under the province’s NDP government. The four to 16-week program provides funding to Alberta employers to hire high school or post-secondary students for summer jobs, giving students the chance to gain valuable work experience before completing their education, while also providing a steady income for the summer.

As a STEP employer, Reflex has brought two programmers and a graphic designer on board for the summer and, rather than tasking them with basic internship duties, is giving them the chance to work on significant company projects and create valuable work products for their portfolios. The two programmers are working under Reflex’s Director of Product Development to help convert the Reflex ERP software to its latest version, as well as assisting in other major initiatives. The graphic designer is working with Reflex’s Marketing and Communications Manager to craft a fresh approach to the company’s branding, including plenty of original artwork and graphics.

“I think STEP is an excellent way for employers and students to have a mutually beneficial working experience,” says Reflex’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Ken Ingram. “It’s important for students to get experience in the field as soon as possible in today’s working world and we’re happy to help provide that to our STEP employees. We’re also very lucky to have such talented students joining our team; in the few weeks they’ve been here, they’ve created some amazing things. It’s a win-win situation.”

All three of the students to join Reflex’s team are currently enrolled in programs at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), the former school of both of Reflex’s co-founders, Al Muirhead and Blaine Harrison. After graduating from NAIT, Muirhead and Harrison formed an IT consulting company, where they spent 30 years writing custom software applications for hundreds of clients. In 2005, they moved away from customization and created Reflex Enterprise Solutions Group with the sole purpose of creating a modern, fully integrated ERP solution that eliminated the need for custom software development.

“NAIT gave me the building blocks to my own career in IT and I’m happy to be able to help NAIT graduates of the future take constructive steps towards building their own careers,” says Reflex co-founder Al Muirhead. “We’re always looking for ways to give back to the community and I’m glad STEP exists to give us the means to assist the workforce of the future.”
